Reborn babies usually start out as a play doll that I feel have lovely features, good size and I think will make a beautiful realistic baby with some hard work.
I also use many different sculpts made from reborn artists. I start the reborning process by stripping all the factory paint off each limb. Even the factory hair is removed. The baby is now a blank canvas and ready for my imagination and creativity to begin! I start by painting each piece with many layers to achieve the skin tones I want for that particular baby.
I have developed some of my own techniques that I have picked up with each new baby I finish. This art continues to evolve and each artist has their own unique style and touch. Some of my babies have the soft peaches and cream skin tone that you see with the older baby. The newborns are given more of a splotchy look with light veining. I use a mottling technique in my painting for the realistic appearance of a young baby.
After I am satisfied with the “skin,” through many many layers of paint I then heat set to make it permanent. My babies will not fade over time.
I then micro root the hair with the best quality of angora mohair. Micro rooting simply means that I only root 2 to 3 hairs a time. The mohair is sealed on the inside so that the baby’s hair can be gently washed and styled.
Each baby is time consuming and each little darling is a one of a kind. It is so exciting to work on a baby and watch the personality evolve. By the time I am finished I am in love with each one. I assemble the baby with the highest quality glass beads and poly pellets to weight the baby. I usually leave the head a a little wobbly to enhance the reality. Even the head is weighted also so that when you hold your baby it feels as if you are holding a real infant.
Each new baby born into my nursery is ready to be loved and adopted. |
